Ernie the Puppy Steals Owners Hearts and also Diamond Earring, Wins 2010 North American Favorite Pet Story

December 16, 2010

As the season of giving to loved ones nears, The North American Pet Health Insurance Association announces “Ernie the Puppy Steals Owners Hearts and also Diamond Earring”, as the winner of the 2010 Favorite Pet Story to highlight the need of pet health insurance. The pet health insurance industry also encourages responsible pet owners to provide a special and critically valuable gift of pet health insurance to their beloved pets this holiday season.

Paul & Sara Michaels will have additional money for this year’s holiday season thanks to pet health insurance. Early this year the Seattle couple decided that they wanted a Havanese puppy. They located Ernie and immediately knew he was a great dog. This was their first dog and they were really surprised at how loyal and loving he was, always wagging his tail and he would seldom bark. The family started to create a routine that included long walks in the evenings, and lazy Sundays at home. It was during lounging on the bed with Ernie on a lazy Sunday morning that the unexpected occurred.  According to Paul, “Ernie had been with us just a few weeks, and we just loved him more and more every day.  He was greeting Sara with his usual morning kisses and snuggles. He has this special way with Sara; he snuggles up to her neck and kisses her ears. Suddenly Sara looked at me with her eyes wide as saucers, and feeling her earlobe…”Oh my God, I think he just…”  I stared back and said “Your earring???”  We quickly did a hard-target search through the sheets, comforter, pillows…nothing.  All through our frantic scramble, Ernie watched, wanting to join in this new game, of course unfazed that he had just eaten 1/2 of my wife’s anniversary present. Ernie was rushed to The Animal Medical Center.  They asked if we had pet insurance and they seemed relieved when we answered yes!   An X-ray showed that Ernie had in fact swallowed it, followed by an endoscopy to remove the earring from his little tummy, so it wouldn’t hurt his intestines if he tried to pass it.

Paul, Sara and Ernie, home and well after surgery

Mr. Michaels went on to comment that it is refreshing to be treated to such world-class care by the veterinary staff and also the customer service of the pet health insurance provider. “We were very concerned and they were all fantastic and helpful as we went through this emergency with Ernie. We’ll always remember that feeling of panic when we didn’t know what was going to happen after he ate the earring, and we’ll never forget the way that the pet health insurance company took such amazing care of our Ernie. The follow-up paperwork was handled professionally and made it so painless and easy for us.  We received detailed, personalized e-mails from a staff that made us feel like our little boy was their number one priority. We are encouraging all of our family and friends to purchase pet health insurance and for the holiday’s we are providing a few policies for our family members with pets”, continued Paul Michaels.

This is the second year that pet insurance companies across North America have joined to celebrate North American Pet Health Insurance Month presented by the North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA). In addition to raising awareness of the values and benefits of pet owners providing responsible care, the month also includes a contest for North America’s Favorite Pet Story and nominations for North America’s Favorite Veterinarian. Grand prizes of $1,000 will be awarded to “North America’s Favorite Pet Story” and “North America’s Favorite Veterinarian”. In addition, the winner of each will choose a worthy animal shelter, pet rescue or pet health research group to receive a $1,000 donation!

According to NAPHIA everyday across North America hundreds and on some days thousands of pets face economic euthanasia at veterinary hospitals because pet owners are not prepared to provide needed care. Importantly, these are not pets that require extensive treatments or a course of care that would subject the pet to pain. These are pets that require more medical care than the pet owner can afford.

The point of Pet Health Insurance Month is to share great stories like Ernie’s. “This lovable and well-cared for puppy will help other pet owners to be responsible and prepared for an unexpected illness or injury.  The real winners of the North American Pet Health Insurance Month are the increasing numbers of pets that are protected and receiving needed care”, explained Laura Bennett, Chair, NAPHIA Board of Directors. “NAPHIA receives inquiries continuously from pet owners that are in need of critical care. Unfortunately, once the pet is diagnosed with a specific illness or serious emergency like Ernie, insurance will not cover that immediate need. Over 50% of loving pet owners in the United States and Canada will purchase a holiday present for their pet. NAPHIA encourages all responsible pet owners to consider pet health insurance as the best possible gift that will provide security and peace of mind for your family! ”

Loran Hickton Departing North American Pet Health Insurance Association – NAPHIA

December 4, 2010

It is with great pride, a clear sense of accomplishment and personal satisfaction that we announce our departure as Executive Director of NAPHIA, effective January 1, 2011.

In the near future, we will be announcing our future plans, and certainly those plans will include continued involvement in pet health related issues and business.

During my involvement in efforts to communicate the value of pet health insurance (as Executive Director of  NAPHIA, and previously through Salmon Creek PR), there have been many milestones reached that have made a measurable difference in the lives of pets and pet owners. We have been very fortunate to participate and play a small part of communicating the tireless efforts of others and the positive difference that quality pet health insurance provides.

There have been enormous investments and countless hours of work of tireless devotion to improve the health and resources for pets. These efforts include the founding members of the Board of Directors of NAPHIA. Founding members are;  Darryl Rawlings, CEO of Trupanion, Dennis Rushovich, CEO of Hartville Group Inc. – ASPCA Pets Health Care Plan), Randy Valpy, president and CEO of SecuriCan General Insurance Co. (PetSecure Canada) and Jack Stephens, DVM, Founder and President of Pets Best Insurance.

The past and continued success of pet health insurance has a strong and undeniable link to Dr. Jack Stephens. He has invested a great portion of his life in the development of pet health insurance to provide more resources for the good health of pets. His work has directly provided measurable reductions of economic euthanasia and directly has saved tens of thousands of pets and untold hardship of pet owners in the United States. Nearly thirty years ago, Jack put together a group of around 700 veterinarians that each contributed $1,000 to create what is now the largest and oldest pet health insurance provider in the United States.  In 2006, Jack’s vision and wisdom brought together key pet health insurance providers and leading members of the pet health community to the Summit.

From the Summit, the founding pet health insurance providers agreed to form NAPHIA as a non-profit organization to bolster the awareness and quality of pet insurance. The Summit also included board members of The American Veterinary Medical Association, board members of The American Animal Hospital Association, board members of The Morris Animal Foundation, Mary Beth Leininger, DVM, Director, Professional Affairs for Hill’s Pet Nutrition, John Francis, Vice President and General Manager of MWI Veterinary Supply, Ronald Brakke, CEO of Brakke Consulting, and Thomas Catanzaro, DVM, of Veterinary Consulting International. The Summit was planned and coordinated by Salmon Creek PR and the objectives were facilitated by Gerald Faust, PhD, of Faust Consulting.

The message and the value of quality pet health insurance is now reaching an unprecedented audience of millions and millions of stakeholders. Today this means that fewer pets are being euthanized; more pet owners are being spared the excruciating decision of providing needed care or putting their pet down. And care-providers are able to now continue care in situations where it just was not possible before as more pet owners have pet health insurance coverage.

Please continue to support NAPHIA and all quality pet health insurance products. Pet Health Insurance is a measurable means to improve the health and happiness of all that enjoy a connection to a loving pet. Your support is life-saving and is making a difference. Also thank you for the kind and positive support that you have extended personally!

Sincerely,

Loran Hickton

The Time is NOW to Engage Quality Pet Health Insurance as a Common Informational Protocol

September 29, 2010

Pet health insurance is now a proven, practical, and robust industry. Yet during this challenging economy the number of veterinary office visits and revenue are decreasing - The Time is Now to Include Pet Health Insurance as a Common Communication protocol for All Veterinary Companion Practices.

With the news of one million less companion veterinary office visits as reported by the AVMA, it seem like an appropriate time to urge greater support by the veterinary community, practitioners, academia, industry suppliers and other related stakeholders to raise more awareness and join with NAPHIA to make quality pet health insurance a common and supported resource at all clinics and hospitals. The critical role quality pet health insurance can provide in the delivery of veterinary medicine is clear. It not only improves the health of pets, of course, it also increases the life-span of the patient; it will also improve the health and security of the veterinary practice.

Pet health insurance has received a bad rap over the years, and perhaps some of it has been well-deserved. Historically, there is a perception that pet health insurance has not always delivered in two key areas of business. First, the market penetration has been weak with only 1-2% of insurable pets in North American having some form of pet health insurance. The ability of the pet health insurance industry and the provider companies has been slow and mostly non-existent in both consumer education and advertising. The other issue has been the methods of communication, education and marketing to the veterinary profession. There are some that have viewed various efforts as over promising and under delivering.

The North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA) was formed as a result of a single meeting “The North American Pet Health Insurance Summit”. The Summit took place in 2006 in Sun Valley Idaho. All pet health insurance providers in the United States and Canada were invited and encouraged to attend. Also invited were distinguished members and leaders of the AVMA, AAHA, Brakke Consulting, Faust Management, Morris Animal Foundation, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, PAW Consulting, Veterinary Consulting International, and many members of academia, the veterinary companion practice community and veterinary business consulting community. At the conclusion of the meeting four pet health insurance providers agreed to form a non-profit to increase education, awareness and to develop higher standards. NAPHIA was formed as a not-for-profit in 2007.

There is much good news to report about NAPHIA and all quality pet health insurance. The growth and health of the industry and the positive impact for pets, pet owners and care providers is clear. NAPHIA has been diligent in working closely with members of consumer news and media. The coverage of the values and benefits of pet health insurance are now reaching a much larger national audience.

As an association, we have carefully focused on the general values of all quality pet health insurance and the NAPHIA efforts have been well received. The consumer print news stories have been covered regionally and nationally. Publications including; USA Today, The New York Times, The Wall Street, and The AARP Magazine are just a few of the major publications that have produced news stories within the past year. Most if not all of these publications have provided ample consumer education about how to review the value and benefits of quality pet health insurance and while making a decision that is well-informed and correct for the pet and the pet owners budget. Some of the improvements in the market place must be attributed to improved transparency of the benefits, values and  limitations of quality pet health insurance.

Additionally, with a robust level of growth and competition, the market and the providers are creating more value and benefits for pet owners and care-providers alike. Pet insurance is simply improving! But for those who supported pet health insurance in the past and may have been disappointed, there may still be challenges and there will always be claims that will be denied. If a practice does not create a clear communication protocol and participate or engage in education for staff and clients, some denied claims may create real or perceived blame for the veterinarian. But if we work together and provide unified and correct communication and education, these issues can be greatly reduced.

The positive changes in the marketplace and the pro-active role of NAPHIA and other groups to create and maintain the highest possible levels of transparency are working. The net result is that more pets are insured, higher levels of needed care can be provided and the lifespan of pets and the relationship with clients increases in many cases by years of additional care.

Quality pet health insurance is not only good for the health of pets, but it can also be healthy for the financial future of the veterinary profession and related industry!

NAPHIA has worked carefully to be a neutral and separate body among the majority of pet health insurance provider / companies in Canada and the United States. NAPHIA has a shared and committed vision among all of our member companies, our sponsors and our partners to make pet health insurance less complicated, and the coverage and exclusions more transparent. We are committed to working with all members (and many non-members), as well as related stakeholders to create and set industry standards and education that improves resources and care. NAPHIA does not engage in the promotion of any one company or companies. While NAPHIA is not directly endorsing any one company over another, we certainly recognize and recommend that pet owners and care-providers consider NAPHIA member companies. There are approximately twelve pet health insurance providers in Canada and the United States, and nine of those companies are current members of NAPHIA.

We encourage more affiliates, associations, educational partners, stakeholders, and potential sponsors to contact NAPHIA! We look forward to hearing from and engaging new groups and partners. All can be assured that working together and in participation with NAPHIA your group or company will witness a measurable form of support that is delivered where it is needed most, at the veterinary companion practice!

Sincerely,

Loran Hickton

New puppy steals their hearts and also a diamond earring

North American Pet Health Insurance Month Highlights Ernie the Puppy with the Diamond Earring

New puppy steals their hearts and also a diamond earring

September 15, 2010 (Pittsburgh, PA) Paul & Sara Miller of Seattle decided to get a puppy. They did some research and decided that they wanted a Havanese. They searched rescue groups and shelters and located a shorthair Havanese (sometimes referred to as Shavanese) who was with a respected and highly regarded breeder. When the Havanese is bred they sometimes produce shorthaired dogs that are not regarded well and may not be shown. These dogs nevertheless are as healthy and happy as all Havanese and make great pets.

They located Ernie and immediately knew he was a great dog. This was their first dog and they were really surprised at how loyal and loving he was, always wagging his tail and he would seldom bark. He was a great watch dog however, because if anyone came to the home he would not only bark a few times but he would locate Sara or Paul and greet the visitor or guest.

The family started to create a routine that included long walks in the evenings, and lazy Sundays at home. It was during lounging on the bed with him on a lazy Sunday morning that the unexpected occurred. An X-ray showed that Ernie had in fact swallowed it. This was followed by an endoscopy to remove the earring from his little tummy, so it wouldn’t hurt his intestines if he tried to pass it.

Mr. Miller went on to comment that it is refreshing to be treated to such world-class care by the veterinary staff and also the customer service of the pet health insurance provider. We received detailed, personalized e-mails from a staff that made us feel like our little boy was their number one priority”, continued Paul Miller.

September 2010 marks the second year that pet insurance companies across North America have joined to celebrate North American Pet Health Insurance Month presented by the North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA).

In an effort to raise awareness about this issue, NAPHIA created the North American Pet Health Insurance Month as a means to encourage pet owners to share their stories of recovery and compassion. In the process we received so many comments about the quality, tireless efforts and loving care of veterinarians that we added the addition contest. Folks can make nominations that and highlight their favorite veterinarian and provide over $2,000 in prizes and donations to their favorite if they win.

The point of Pet Health Insurance Month is to share great stories like Ernie’s. “This lovable and well-cared for puppy will help other pet owners to be responsible and prepared for an unexpected illness or injury. The real winners of the North American Pet Health Insurance Month are the increasing numbers of pets that are protected and receiving needed care”, explained Loran Hickton, Executive Director of NAPHIA. “NAPHIA receives calls every week from pet owners that are trying to find resources to cover needed care. Unfortunately, once the pet is diagnosed with a specific illness or injury insurance will not cover that immediate need.”

Brandy is true to the adage “you don’t pick a dog; that the dogs in your life pick you!”
(edited for space from 2010 pet owner nomination)Brandy is a cocker spaniel who entered the world on October 17, 1993. She lived to be one week shy of her 15th birthday, and passed from this world on 10/11/08. With her passing, she took a big part of our hearts.

I once read that you don’t pick a dog; that the dogs in your life pick you. How very true those words resonated on December 19, 1993. The moment our eyes locked amidst the barking and chaos, we were hooked. Her eyes fixated on our’s while all the other dogs barked or paced, trembled and pleaded to be released from their cages. Our girl said, “It’s about time you got here, you’ve been waiting for me all your life.”

She was such a gorgeous dog inside and out. Our Brandy was and always will be a child to us. She went everywhere with us, visited the elderly in nursing homes and a high rise, traveled the country with us (in a car, never on a plane), had her own pet health insurance, and truly made our lives complete. With a home-based career, she was a part of our lives for 24/7. Twice she had mass cell cancer and twice we beat it. She had cherry eye and overcame that. She had a patellar luxation, and Cornell University’s top orthopedic surgeon fixed that. We always kept her in tip-top shape, with the best food, lots of love and care, walks, play sessions, and so much more.

Pet health insurance provided me the peace of mind time and again to help Brandy in her moments of healthcare need. This always provided an extra level of comfort during such difficult times in her life.

In her time on Earth, she went on every vacation with us and shared her love and zest for life every step of the way. From the beaches of Maine and Cape Cod to the Grand Ole Opry in Tennessee, the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, and even the battlefields of Gettysburg… a photo album of her life shows that warm cocker smile and eternal puppy gaze that endeared her to us and those she encountered. For the memories etched in our hearts, we are forever grateful.

Her illness came sudden, which might just be a blessing. I won’t go into great detail about the final moments except that we were there, it was peaceful, she went from little snores of cocker life, to the ceasing of breathing and the passing of her sick weak body, as her spirit moved on.

She is definitely in heaven, the heaven that is a mere breath away, and she has come to us in our dreams, in the stars, and has given us very unique signs that she is among us. But the day-to-day living and not having her here, the routines we shared, the love and bond of physical closeness…. those we miss the most.

We are true cocker spaniel lovers, and we have chosen to open our hearts and our homes to another, whose name is Dexter. We truly believe Brandy would want us to be happy in our time on Earth, as she always embraced every day. Again, we have pet health insurance and will always do this for the special canines who enter our hearts and share our home. Our lives will always have the pitter patter of cocker feet in it, and our hearts will always be guaranteed the bittersweet knowledge that we are only given these furry angels for only a short time. (end)

Second Year for NAPHIA – North American Pet Health Insurance Month!

June 21, 2010

Last year with just a few months of planning the North American Pet Health Insurance Association joined one of our member companies from Canada in “Pet Health Insurance Month”.

It turned out to be a wonderful experience. We got to share some amazing stories of pets and loving and committed pet owners. We also received so many stories about great veterinarians. Here is the quote about the 2009 North American Favorite Veterinarian Winner, Dr. Wayne Ingmire, who practices at the Mokena Animal Clinic near Chicago. He was nominated by Charlene Tabler, a client since 1982. According to Ms. Tabler, “Our family feels that “Doc” is the most caring and focused care providers we have ever met. And that includes our children’s pediatrician and we certainly love our pediatrician! Doc has been with us through the lives of our pets during the good times and times of illness and loss. From getting down on the floor and saying hello to our pets, to holding our hand as we discussed cancer treatments for one of our dogs, Doc is a most loving and caring health provider. There have been several times throughout the years that Doc would call in the early evening to check on our pets and make sure everything was going well. He does so much more for us than treating our pets, Doc treats our entire family.”

The 2009 winner of our Favorite Pet Story was “Heimdall, the gentle giant Great Dane. Meg Wittenmyer is a member of the Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue Group. Just a few years back Meg was only going to keep Heimdall for a few days until a good home could be located. You may have an idea of what occurred. It happens to all of us who love and care for pets. The dog was very special and not just because of his hearing disability. Meg and her husband quickly found a kind and gentle giant with a soul that could be seen through his eyes and he immediately melted the hearts of what became his new family. Working with Great Dane rescue and having them for years taught Heimdall’s new parents the importance of maintaining pet insurance coverage. With big dogs there are sometimes risks for big bills, which is why the rescue strongly recommends pet insurance to all our adoptive families. Little did they know how true that would be when they took Heimdall into their regular vet for a persistent cough. In November 2008, what began as an upper respiratory infection progressed to recurring pneumonia to bacteria, that mutated each time the veterinarian tried a new antibiotic. Between November 2008 and May 2009 their pet insurance company had paid their policies maximum annual benefit of $10,000. Meg said that “not only did they pay the bills we submitted in a timely manner, but we knew that the staff of the pet health insurance company cared as much about what happened with Heimdall as we did. Very sadly, Heimdall passed away, as Meg shared his story and she sincerely wanted everyone to know that if your pet is important to you, then pet insurance should be just as important. “We would have done anything to get Heimdall the treatment he needed and having insurance meant not having to take out a second mortgage or even selling our house, but more importantly, gave us many extra months with our beautiful baby boy, which really is priceless. It’s just that simple.”

Well we ended up spending some time with Meg, Joel and the good folks at Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue. Though there was a great deal of sadness and frankly we were concerned about even telling the story. The judges were not sure we should tell the story of pet owners losing a much beloved pet to a very complicated illness.

Well we did it because it was the best story and Meg and Joel were fantastic. They participated in interviews from around the country, press, radio, and TV. We enjoyed a special reception held by the Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue called “Cocktails for Tails”. It was wonderful and there were 20 Great Danes in attendance (in addition to humans) at a very fashionable art gallery in Boulder. RMGDR allowed NAPHIA to award Meg and Joel and also provide a special grant to Heimdall’s veterinarian. It turned out to be an important and valuable contest and sharing the difficult story of Heimdall certainly has helped other pet owners.

Here is a quote from a note we received from Meg regarding this year’s contest:”I wish you much luck this year. I hope you get another amazing story and can help someone else out the way you helped us.”

So we are off to a good start for the 2010 North American Pet Health Insurance Month!!!

June 17, 2010 (Pittsburgh PA) September 2010 marks the second year that pet insurance companies in the United States and Canada are joining together to celebrate North American Pet Health Insurance Month presented by the North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA).

2009 was a great success with thousands of entries for the Favorite Veterinarian and Favorite Pet Insurance Story contests. This initiative includes communications and education for pet owners across the continent throughout the month of September. Supporters include pet health insurance companies, pet food and pharmaceutical providers and countless others.

North American Pet Health Insurance Month was first introduced in Canada by Petsecure Pet Health Insurance www.petsecure.com. According to Randy Valpy, President & CEO of Petsecure, “We began this effort in Canada five years ago and each year it continues to be a great success. The addition of our fellow NAPHIA member companies in the United States has created a huge boost and even greater understanding of the value of pet health insurance. This effort provides a special opportunity to share stories directly from pet owners about their experiences with pet insurance. This initiative highlights the value of all quality pet health insurance.”

Pet owners, care providers and other members of the community are encouraged to send in stories and photographs of their pets for North America’s Favorite Pet Insurance Story and make a nomination for North America’s Favorite Veterinarian. Both contests can be entered online on NAPHIA’s website, www.naphia.org.

The winner/ pet owner of the Favorite Pet Insurance Story contest will take home $1,000, and a special donation of $500 in the name of their dog or cat to their favorite local shelter or rescue group.

The prize for the Favorite Veterinarian is a $1,000 educational grant, plus a special trip for two to receive national recognition at the North American Pet Health Insurance Reception in Pittsburgh in September. The grant can be used to attend continuing education programs, conferences and conventions or be applied to the purchase of needed veterinary diagnostic equipment.

Runner ups in each contest will receive Apple iPads. Other great prizes will also be available.

“We are very gratified that National Pet Health Insurance Month appears to be a positive and valuable effort. It is intended to help all pets and care providers by highlighting great pets and their owners, veterinarians, veterinary hospitals, and the support of quality pet health insurance,” stated Loran Hickton, Executive Director of NAPHIA. “We look forward to another successful year in 2010.”
